Port Botany Expansion

Budget: Container Terminal 3 (~$700M)

The two projects provided NSW and Sydney with increased port capacity to meet long term growth in trade, primarily imports through containers and bulk liquids, primarily fuel imports. The projects included significant expansion of the landside transport links by providing a grade separated main terminal entry and improvements to the terminal and Port Botany Freight Line links.

The Container Terminal 3 expansion provided an additional 1,800metres of container berth, 63 hectares of terminal area and an additional 600metre rail siding, grade separation of the existing port road and rail entry as well as a dedicated new high capacity road link of Foreshore Drive. The project included significant environmental enhancements to Penryhn Estuary and Foreshore Beach.
Bulk Liquids Berth 2 provided a modern common-user berth and fuel/chemical offloading system to meet NSW’s growing demand for imported fuel products.

Key Outcomes

Both projects achieved their business objectives and added significantly to the capacity and value of the Port assets which were sold by the NSW Government to NSW Ports. Both projects were delivered under budget and on schedule.

Testamonial

Sydney Ports’ management team has continued with the tender process to let the contract to reclaim 60 hectares of land for a third container terminal at Port Botany. This process has been overseen by a project control group including Mr Colin Rudd from Sydney Ports and officers from the Office of the Coordinator General (Mr Chris Herbert), and the NSW Treasury (Mr Danny Graham). This project control group is assessing tenders from the
final two parties on the short list and we expect the contract to be awarded early in the new year. On behalf of the Board I would like to extend our thanks to Mr Herbert, Mr Graham and Mr Rudd and all their staff for their excellent work.
