The Cross River Rail Project was a proposed $5B, 18-kilometre north-south rail line from Salisbury to Bowen Hills through Brisbane's CBD, with additional railway tracks and stations for passenger and freight train services.  The project was stopped due to funding re-direction for state wide flood impact management.  The key features were:

  • a 9.8km tunnel from Yeerongpilly to Victoria Park

  • new underground stations at Boggo Road, 'Gabba', Albert Street and Roma Street

  • two new surface stations and two station upgrades

  • extensive surface track works, expansion of rail yards and a major rail viaduct.

Key Outcomes

Business case was assessed by infrastructure Australia as ‘ready for investment’ – best project of the year (documentation)
